Events for Board Leaders

16 September 2020, Wednesday

Ms Janet Ang, Member of Council for Board Diversity, Independent Director of SPH Limited and Chair of NUS Institute of Systems Science, joined 4 other guests for a panel discussion on the topic of board diversity.

She shared her views on the need for companies to look at diversity across various dimensions that aligns with their strategy and relevant to their business, and highlighted that companies lacking in gender diversity may be perceived as not being serious about diversity in all aspects, given that gender is an important and the most visible form of diversity widely tracked by institutional investors.

She also encouraged Chairpersons to consciously cultivate the right board dynamics and culture that enable them to harness the benefits of having diverse views by encouraging constructive dissent.

The Diversity Action Committee (DAC) partnered the Investor Relations Professionals Association (Singapore) (IRPAS) to organise a forum attended by over 100 IRPAS members and guests.

Currently, many companies do not prioritise communicating the quality of their board to investors, despite increasing interest from stakeholder groups. As there have been calls for greater disclosure, transparency, board diversity and independence, the Singapore Institute of Directors, in Aug 2015, launched the Nominating Committee (NC) Guide which outlines the regulatory and practical aspects of the NC’s responsibilities.
