Ms Janet Ang spoke about the business imperative of women on boards at CDL & Hong Leong Group Sustainability Forum

The Diversity Action Committee (DAC) was invited to speak at the 4th Hong Leong/CDL Group Annual Sustainability Forum held at the Singapore Sustainability Academy on 20 November 2017. Attended by some 90 directors, senior management and sustainability committee members from 11 companies under the Group, the Forum convened an esteemed panel of sustainability experts to discuss about emerging sustainability trends and the economic opportunities they present for businesses. The expert panel includes keynote speaker Mr David Galipeau, Chief Impact Officer, Asia-Pacific, United Nation Development Programme (UNPD), Mr Mikkel Larsen, Managing Director and Co-Chair of Sustainability Council, DBS Bank, Ms Herry Cho, Head of Sustainable Finance, Asia Pacific, ING Bank, Ms Karen Lee, Sustainability Lead for Asia, Interface Inc and Ms Janet Ang, Member of the DAC and Vice President of Industry Solutions and Smarter Cities, IBM Asia Pacific.

Ms Janet Ang presented on the business imperative of women on boards and gender diversity as a best practice for board nomination process. Her talk roused keen interest and conversation among the directors and senior management during the panel discussion moderated by Ms. Esther An, CDL Chief Sustainability Officer. The highly-engaged audience seek practical advice from the panellists on how to embrace sustainability best practices such as gender diversity, impact investing, ESG and Sustainable Development Goals integration and Recommendations of Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures, especially for first-time adopters and medium-sized enterprises.

Following the Forum, CDL’s Nominating Committee went on to approve the adoption of a formal Board Diversity Policy and a DAC-aligned target of 20% women on CDL’s board by 2020. Earlier in the year, CDL CEO Mr. Sherman Kwek also put forth CDL’s top management commitment for this important agenda by joining the DAC to advocate for increasing women directors on listed company boards in Singapore.
